It's unlikely that Heroes of Might and Magic III HD will snag itself a new audience. It can feel a little bland if you're not paying attention, but if you want to sink your teeth into settlement micro-management, resource gathering, and army-building, there's an awful lot here to grab your attention. It can be a little fiddly getting to grips with how everything works, and the two-finger-swipe scroll command feels a little cumbersome.īut there's a meaty, in-depth tactical RPG underneath all the retro stylings. Here you'll pit your soldiers against an enemy army in a turn-based battle to the death.Įverything is controlled with taps, and the UI works reasonably well. Start a fight and the view switches from the map to a grid-based battlefield. There are areas to explore, loot to find, resources to nab, and strongholds to capture. The games sees you leading a hero through a map. The strategy RPG has moved on a good way since the game first came out, and it's starting to creak and groan under the strain. If you've yet to play a Might and Magic game though, it's likely this one will leave you cold. If you're a fan of the series then you'll likely lap up this portable version, and look past the little quirks and nuances that new players might find annoying. The beating heart of the game is still decidedly old fashioned, and a lick of paint and a few extra pixels here and there can't do anything to change that fact. At least when it comes to its presentation. Heroes of Might and Magic III HD is a retro game with the edges smoothed off.
